Relief Print Studio
Relief printmaking comprises woodcut, linocut, wood engraving and letterpress. It is one of the oldest forms of printmaking, but is also the most low-fi – you need little more than a tool for cutting and a surface to cut.
We focus on traditional tools, equipment and processes, but we also encourage a contemporary approach where students can experiment and feel free to play. Once you have completed a short introductory workshop you are free to use the studio whenever you like. Book a workshop via the Student Project Coordinators. Location: 0C7 & 0C4, C-Block, Bower Ashton Staff: Ben Goodman and Demi Insall |
Wood EngravingA form of woodcut printmaking which uses very hard end-grain blocks. Prints are generally quite small and very detailed. The blocks are type-high so can be easily printed along side letterpress type. Which makes them perfect for illustrating text.

LinocutThe easiest and most accessible form of relief print. Linocut uses soft pieces of Linoleum (used for flooring) and tools known as gouges.
It's perfect for large, bold prints. If you're new to relief print, try this first. |
LetterpressWe have over 250 fonts and hundreds of thousands of sorts (the name for individual letters). You can assemble them into infinite combinations to create anything from abstract patterns to traditional pages of poetry.
