Finishing and Digital Studio
Location: 0C3, C-Block, Bower Ashton
Staff: Ben Goodman In this studio you will find all our embossing, foiling, blocking and tooling equipment. Each process and piece of equipment has its advantages and limitations (see below) and you will need to book an introductory workshop before you are allowed to use anything. We also have a suite of Macs with Adobe InDesign installed for you to complete your digital work. There is also a free black and white printer, A4 scanner and workshop table. Bookbinding equipment can be found in 0C2 next door. |
BlockingThe industry standard for adding foil to book covers. It involves pressing a hot metal plate (aka block) into your book cover. However, it's expensive and slow.
LetterpressLike letterpress printing, but using brass instead of lead. It's free (or very cheap) and only takes a hour. However we only have a few fonts to choose from
ToolingTooling uses individual letters and patterns called tools. Each one is heated up and pressed into the cover with foil. We have a mixture of ancient tools of various sizes, and also a modern electric tooling machine.
Toner FoilingThis method works by sending a laser print through the laminator with some foil on top. The heat of the laminator melts the laser toner and the foil sticks to the toner. It only works on thin smooth paper (not book cloth or covers)
Blind EmbossingBlind embossing is the effect of a indenting a surface without foil. You can use blocking, letterpress or tooling to emboss. Alternatively you can use a photo-polymer plate in the etching studio.
